Strange Essence refers to the philosophical concerns of the Fey Gods of Arcadia, in their endless quest for the meaning of existence. There were originally ten Strange Essences:
- Action: the essence of doing something, wherein the philosophical predicate seeks meaning through the right actions
- Condition: the essence of a temporary states, wherein the philosophical predicate seeks meaning through the right combination of states
- Location: the essence of placement, wherein the philosophical predicate seeks meaning by finding the right place in the universe
- Orientation: the essence of relative position, wherein the philosophical predicate seeks meaning by finding the right internal arrangement of self
- Passion: the essence of experience, wherein the philosophical predicate seeks meaning by undergoing and eliciting the right experiences
- Quality: the essence of inherent traits, wherein the philosophical predicate seeks meaning through an understanding of the inherent nature of things
- Quantity: the essence of measurement, wherein the philosophical predicate seeks meaning by measuring the right parts of the universe
- Relation: the essence of interactivity between things, wherein the philosophical predicate seeks meaning by finding the right relationship with everything else
- Substance: the essence of identity, wherein the philosophical predicate seeks meaning through an understanding of indivisible categorization
- Time: the essence of causality, wherein the philosophical predicate seeks meaning through a deeper understanding of discrete and continuous moments
Each Fey God explores one or more of these Strange Essences, and by doing so, founds a Fey Court that attracts curious minds. The philosophical hypothesis of the Fey God shapes the culture of their Court, as well as the species of Fey that participate in the culture.
The Strange Essence of Condition was metaphysically erased from consideration by The Concordant Queen during The War of Erasure - so currently there are only nine Strange Essences being explored for meaning by Fey Gods.
