A curious Pixie on her philosophical journey to shrink in size.

Overview

Pixies (Commonspeak), also Tabhartin (Feyspeak \ˈtaʊərˌtin\ for little gift), are a Fey species native to Arcadia. They are the sole species of The Barren Court, ruled by The Giving Queen. Pixies embody Strange Meaning through sacrifice, abnegation, and generosity taken to its most destructive extreme.

Unlike other Fey whose power grows through accumulation or dominance, Pixies diminish themselves deliberately, treating loss as proof of devotion and worth.

History

Dark Age

Pixies came into existence in the middle Dark Age, circa NIR 1400, with the formation of The Barren Court. In an era where many Fey philosophies hardened into control, endurance, or excess, the Barren Court proposed a radically different answer to suffering.

Strange Meaning, they claimed, was found not in what one possesses, but in what one willingly gives away, especially when giving hurts.

Pixies were shaped as the living expression of this doctrine.

Dawn Age

In the current era, Pixies remain rare but influential within Arcadia. Their Court is respected, feared, and quietly avoided, as prolonged exposure to its philosophy is often ruinous even for other Fey.

Cosmology

The Barren Court holds that Strange Meaning arises through sacrifice. To give freely what is abundant is trivial; to give what one cannot spare is sacred.

Pixies embody this belief physically. As they advance in the Court’s philosophy, giving more and more of themselves, their bodies shrink. Loss is not metaphorical; it is anatomical. Mass, presence, and even identity are surrendered in service of meaning.

At the pinnacle of this path stands The Giving Queen, the smallest of all Pixies, no taller than a human pinky finger, having given away nearly everything except the will to give.

Society

Pixie society is brutally generous.

Within The Barren Court:

  • Status is earned by giving beyond one’s means.
  • Refusing aid when one could give is considered moral failure.
  • Accepting aid without later giving more is treated as stagnation.

The unsettling truth is that Pixies do not recognize self-preservation as a virtue. When they cannot soften the world through generosity, they soften themselves instead, until nothing remains but the act of giving.

Pixies who give too much too quickly sometimes vanish entirely, their final gifts leaving no body behind.

Ecology

Pixies initially resemble short Fairfolk with delicate, gossamer wings. Their flight is light and graceful, allowing them to hover, dart, and linger with precision.

As Pixies progress along their philosophical path, they steadily shrink. This reduction is irreversible. Elder Pixies are tiny, nearly weightless beings, capable of slipping unnoticed through the smallest spaces.

Pixies possess a remarkable resistance: they are immune to all forms of charm, temptation, and enticement. Nothing can persuade them to keep what they believe should be given away. Desire, once relinquished, cannot reclaim them.

Pixies favor environments marked by scarcity, ruins, refugee spaces, and places where something essential is missing. There, they give until they are diminished, and then give again.
