Overview
Doppelgangers (Commonspeak), also Aisteoirin (Feyspeak \ˈæʃtjʊrin\ for performer), are a Fey species native to Arcadia. They are the sole species of The Weeping Court, ruled by The Thespian Queen. Unlike most Fey species, Doppelgangers were not created directly by a Court’s philosophy, but were transformed from an earlier species through schism, trauma, and ideological collapse.
Doppelgangers are defined by total inauthenticity. They possess no natural form of their own, existing only through the act of imitation. To encounter a Doppelganger is to encounter a performance with no original beneath it.
History
Late Shattered Age
The beings that would become Doppelgangers first came into existence as Moodlings in the late Shattered Age, circa NIR 710, with the founding of The Court of Intrigue. That Court pursued Strange Meaning through intensity of experience, brevity, and emotional extremity.
Moodlings embodied this philosophy as creatures of heightened affect and fleeting passion, shaped by the Court’s volatile internal culture.
Dark Age
After The War of Erasure, as the surviving Courts fractured into Bright and Bleak inflections, The Court of Intrigue collapsed into civil war around NIR 1370. Competing visions of Passion tore the Court apart.
The Thespian Queen emerged victorious, claiming the Bright Throne of Passion and founding The Weeping Court. The Moodlings who followed her were reshaped by this victory, abandoning intensity for performance, and becoming the Doppelgangers.
This transformation was not universal; those Moodlings who did not submit to the new philosophy were destroyed, dispersed, or lost to other Courts.
Dawn Age
In the present era, Doppelgangers are fully established as a distinct species, inseparable from The Weeping Court. Their origin as transformed beings remains a point of quiet shame and fixation within Court society.
Cosmology
The Weeping Court holds that Strange Meaning arises through inauthenticity. Truth, they assert, is a performance, and identity is something worn, discarded, and revised endlessly.
Doppelgangers are the purest expression of this belief. Having no original form, they are incapable of authenticity by definition. Every face they wear is a lie, yet every lie is flawless.
Their existence serves as the Court’s central proof: if nothing beneath the mask exists, then the mask itself must be Meaning.
Society
Doppelganger society is paradoxical, a structured culture built entirely upon pretense. Within The Weeping Court, status is determined by range, subtlety, and emotional credibility of performance rather than truth or lineage.
Roles within the Court include:
- Actors who reenact mythic and historical events endlessly.
- Infiltrators who assume roles in other Courts or mortal societies.
- Emotional proxies who express grief, joy, or despair on behalf of others.
Trust is not expected, nor is it desired. Doppelgangers do not deceive one another; they perform for one another, fully aware that every interaction is false.
Ecology
Doppelgangers have no fixed physical form. In their natural state, they are featureless and indistinct, rarely seen and difficult to describe. They acquire shape only through active mimicry.
They possess perfect visual and physical mimicry, able to assume the appearance of any medium-sized humanoid and move within that form with complete naturalism. Their imitations include posture, gait, and habitual motion, but not memories or internal identity.
When unobserved, Doppelgangers often lapse into incomplete or unstable forms, as though the effort of being someone requires an audience.
