Overview
Redcaps (Commonspeak), also Fear Dearg (Feyspeak \fɑr dɑrg\ for red man), are a Fey species native to Arcadia. They are the sole species of The Bleeding Court, ruled by The Spider Queen. Redcaps embody Strange Meaning through hardship, punishment, and the belief that suffering is not only inevitable, but necessary.
Among all Fey species, Redcaps are the most openly violent. Where other Courts rationalize harm through abstraction, Redcaps embrace it directly, treating pain as instruction and survival as proof of worth.
History
Dark Age
Redcaps came into existence in the early Dark Age, circa NIR 1350, with the formation of The Bleeding Court. This Court arose in the aftermath of the War of Erasure, when many Fey philosophies hardened into extremes out of fear that softness or ambiguity could invite annihilation.
The Spider Queen asserted that Strange Meaning could only be forged through hardship and enforced through punishment. From this doctrine emerged the Redcaps, shaped not to endure suffering passively, but to administer it.
Dawn Age
In the current era, Redcaps remain confined largely to the domains of the Bleeding Court, though their raids, punishments, and mercenary violence are felt far beyond it.
Cosmology
The Bleeding Court holds that Strange Meaning is created through pain. Suffering is not a consequence of failure, but the mechanism by which truth is revealed.
Redcaps embody this belief fully. They do not fear outcomes, because fear implies preference. To a Redcap, all outcomes are instructional. They cannot be intimidated, and they cannot be swayed by remorse. Contrition is meaningless to them, as they believe the mind yields long before the spirit is truly tested.
Punishment, in their view, is mercy delayed but deserved.
Society
Redcap society is built entirely upon violence. It is sadistic, hierarchical, and merciless, yet not chaotic.
Within The Bleeding Court:
- Status is earned through the infliction and endurance of suffering.
- Mercy is considered indulgence.
- Weakness is not punished once, but repeatedly, until it ceases to exist.
The only authority Redcaps respect is the judgment of The Spider Queen. Her word is final, not because she is feared, but because her cruelty is regarded as perfect. Redcaps do not question her decisions; they seek to emulate them.
The unsettling truth is that Redcaps do not see themselves as monsters. They see themselves as correct.
Ecology
Redcaps vary greatly in size, ranging from approximately 100 to 250 centimeters in height. Their skin is pale and mottled, except for the tops of their heads, which are covered in thick, blood-red hair.
Their proportions are grotesquely asymmetrical. Upper arms, upper legs, necks, and ribs are thin and wiry, while forearms, lower legs, hands, feet, and jaws are massively muscular. Their ears taper like those of other Fairfolk, but their expressions are permanently predatory. Their teeth are made of stone.
Redcaps possess several disturbing abilities:
- They cannot be intimidated, as they fear no outcome.
- They cannot be persuaded by remorse or apology.
- They are physically stronger and tougher than any other Fey species.
- Most horrifyingly, they can eat any living thing they can bite, regardless of size, composition, or resilience.
Redcaps thrive in environments saturated with violence: battlefields, execution grounds, torture halls, and places where punishment is ritualized. In peaceful settings, they grow restless, as though deprived of purpose.
