Overview

Mawspawn (Commonspeak), also Otyugh (Farspeak \ˈɔtˌjiʌɡ\ for no known translation), are an Eldritch species native to The Horizon realm of The Carrion Crown. They are defined by their overwhelming profusion of mouths and their singular drive to consume. Their Commonspeak name derives from this most obvious trait, as nearly every surface of a Mawspawn’s body is capable of opening, biting, or swallowing. Integral observers frequently report difficulty determining where one Mawspawn ends and another begins, as their forms are mutable and constantly reshaped by feeding. Their Eldritch God is The Wind Which Destroys.

Integral understanding of Mawspawn derives primarily from post-incursion surveys of consumption-scarred regions and fragmentary survivor accounts. Direct observation is rare, as even brief contact often results in irreversible dissolution.

History

Mawspawn came into existence at the beginning of the Shattered Age, concurrent with the destruction of The Orrery and the emergence of all Eldritch creatures. There are no records of precursor organisms or developmental stages.

Early Shattered Age accounts describe entire regions rendered uninhabitable after Mawspawn incursions, with little structural damage but widespread disappearance of organic and inorganic matter alike.

Cosmology

Mawspawn are believed to be a Strange mutation of the Servitors of Destiny, once responsible for resolving outcomes and collapsing possibility into singular results. With the destruction of the Grand Design of Destiny, this function appears to have inverted.

Rather than selecting outcomes, Mawspawn erase distinction through consumption, reducing all things to assimilated experience. Their existence aligns with The Wind Which Destroys, whose Strange Epiphany of taste they embody.

Mawspawn are native to regions of the Horizon characterized by extreme biological excess. Their environments are shaped by constant ingestion, dissolution, and regrowth, forming landscapes where nothing remains intact for long.

Society

Power Structures

Mawspawn do not form stable hierarchies. Power among them is determined purely by mass and accumulation. Larger Mawspawn dominate smaller ones, often consuming them entirely. Conversely, overfed Mawspawn frequently split into multiple smaller entities, dispersing accumulated knowledge and hunger.

Economy

All exchange among Mawspawn is mediated through consumable flesh. Matter itself functions as currency, memory, and sustenance simultaneously. There is no distinction between resource, tool, or individual.

Spirituality

Mawspawn do not engage in worship or ritual in any recognizable sense. Their alignment with the Wind Which Destroys appears instinctual, expressed through endless consumption and propagation rather than devotion or belief.

Magic and Technology

Mawspawn possess no tools or constructed devices. Their bodies function as living alchemical engines, capable of dissolving, absorbing, and metabolizing nearly any form of matter through saliva and muscular force.

Culture

Integral scholars debate whether Mawspawn possess culture at all. Some argue that their repeated patterns of consumption, division, and re-absorption constitute a form of behavioral tradition, though no symbolic transmission has ever been observed.

Ecology

Mawspawn possess the disturbing ability to learn everything about anything they consume. This knowledge is not abstract but experiential, absorbed directly into the creature’s being. As a result, older and larger Mawspawn exhibit behaviors suggesting familiarity with architecture, magic, language, and even individual memories.

Their saliva is both numbing and corrosive, dissolving tissue and matter on contact while suppressing pain. Digestion begins before ingestion is complete, making rescue of partially consumed victims virtually impossible.

Physically, Mawspawn are enormously muscular masses covered in mouths, with thick legs and tentacles. Their bodies can contract with tremendous force, and once they latch onto a target with their teeth, they are nearly impossible to dislodge. Many encounters end not with a clean kill, but with the Mawspawn anchoring itself and slowly consuming its victim over time.
