Overview

The Apparatus (Enchiridian), sometimes called Backstage, is named for it's similarity to a machine. It functions as both a realm of the Integrum and a piece of Founder technology.

Very little is understood about The Apparatus, as it is the most advanced piece of Founder technology that exists. Knowledge of its history comes from servitors and gods, primarily. Knowledge (or more often theories) of its function comes from servitors and gods, as well as the arcanists.

History

The Apparatus was created by the Founders in the First Age. In a manner not well understood, it "unfolded" from Bastion into its own space, spatially adjacent to the universe, but not within it. This space was the first ethereal realm, and it is believed that all ethereal realms originate from Founder technology in some fashion.

During the Integration, the Integrum was built from The Apparatus by servitors.

If The Apparatus has changed in the ages since it was first created, no one who exists can say. It has toiled endlessly in its ethereal realm throughout the ages.

Cosmology

The Apparatus is the machine that governs the operation of the Integrum. The mechanisms of The Apparatus are connected to every aspect the Integrum and beyond. The Apparatus is an ethereal realm, in that it exists in an extradimensional space. The only creatures known to travel into The Apparatus are servitors. However, the arcanists do view The Apparatus as part of their training.

Geography

The Apparatus has no known, discernable geographical features. It is a seemingly infinite collection of gears, springs, escapements, balance wheels, pinions, and ratchets, with fractal levels of complexity.

Inhabitants

The only inhabitants of The Apparatus are servitors.
