Overview

Sprites (Commonspeak), also Scigin (Feyspeak \ʃkɪgˈin\ for mockery), are a Fey species native to Arcadia. They are the sole species of The Laughing Court, ruled by The Bitter Queen. Sprites embody Strange Meaning through reaction, humiliation, and the emotional consequences of ridicule.

Among the Fey, Sprites are widely regarded as the most socially dangerous species, not because of physical violence, but because of how precisely they identify and exploit vulnerability.

Shattered Age

Sprites did not originally exist as a distinct species. Like the Doppelgangers, they began as Moodlings of The Court of Intrigue in the late Shattered Age, circa NIR 710. At that time, Moodlings embodied passion and emotional intensity without judgment.

Dark Age

After the War of Erasure, around NIR 1370, The Court of Intrigue collapsed into philosophical civil war. One faction, led by The Bitter Queen, rejected performance and sincerity alike, asserting that Strange Meaning arises not from feeling itself, but from reaction.

Moodlings who followed her into the newly formed The Laughing Court were reshaped into Sprites. Passion was distilled into mockery, and intensity into cruelty.

Dawn Age

In the current era, Sprites dominate their Court absolutely. The Laughing Court has become infamous across Arcadia as a crucible of humiliation, social predation, and enforced emotional collapse.

Cosmology

The Laughing Court holds that Strange Meaning is created through reaction. A feeling that provokes no response is meaningless; pain that draws laughter is proof of impact.

Sprites embody this belief by existing as instruments of emotional pressure. Their growth in size reflects accumulated success in eliciting reactions, especially shame, embarrassment, and self-doubt.

The Bitter Queen herself stands as the Court’s ultimate proof: vast, towering, and fed entirely by the misery of others.

Society

Pixie society is the most vicious, ruthless, and cutthroat of all Fey Courts, surpassing even The Gilded Court in cruelty.

Within the Laughing Court:

• Status is earned through public humiliation of rivals.
• Advancement requires cruelty performed with wit, timing, and spectacle.
• Mercy is considered weakness, and silence is treated as failure.

Sprites constantly undermine one another, but open rebellion is rare. The Bitter Queen rewards cruelty that destabilizes others without threatening her own position. Those who fail to entertain or wound sufficiently are mocked downward until they diminish or vanish.

The unsettling truth is that Sprites do not merely enjoy cruelty, they measure meaning by the depth of the wound they provoke.

Ecology

Sprites initially appear as tiny Fairfolk with delicate butterfly wings. Their flight is agile and precise, allowing them to hover just out of reach while delivering verbal or psychic barbs.

As Sprites rise in status through acts of ridicule and cruelty, their bodies grow larger. This growth is cumulative and irreversible. Lesser Sprites flit like insects; elder Sprites loom like predators. At the apex stands The Bitter Queen, as tall as a very large Fairfolk.

Sprites possess the ability to read self-esteem as plainly as if it were clothing. They instantly perceive insecurity, shame, and suppressed doubt, and instinctively know how to apply pressure to make it rupture.

They favor crowded social spaces, performances, courts, and gatherings, anywhere reactions can be witnessed, shared, and amplified.
