A Thought Eater.

Overview

Thought Eaters (Commonspeak), or Vyrathix (Farkspeak \ˈvirəˌθɪks\ for no known translation) are an Eldritch species native to The Horizon realm of The Nautilus Tower. Their Commonspeak name derives from both their corruption of cognition as well as their literal collection and eating of brains. Their Eldrith God is The King of All Tears.

Integral understanding of Thought Eaters comes primarily from the journals of corrupted scholars, recovered anatomical notes from failed research expeditions, and fragmentary testimony from survivors whose memories are incomplete or unreliable. Direct observation is rare, as prolonged proximity rapidly compromises cognition.

History

Thought Eaters came into existence at the beginning of the Shattered Age, alongside all Eldritch species, following the destruction of The Orrery.

In the Shattered Age, there was a major incursion of Thought Eaters in the mortal realm of Dwarfhome.

Cosmology

Thought Eaters are believed to be a Strange mutation of the Servitors of Destiny, once responsible for evaluating possibility, consequence, and decision. With the collapse of the Grand Design of Destiny, this evaluative function appears to have inverted.

Thought Eaters are native to the Nautilus Tower, a structure that appears to amplify and refract thought itself. Spatial geometry within the tower subtly shifts in response to mental activity, creating an environment hostile to stable identity.

Society

Power Structures

Thought Eaters exist as a perfect hive mind, with no observable hierarchy or individuality. All members share awareness, intention, and memory. No Thought Eater has ever been observed acting independently of the collective.

Economy

Rather than material exchange, Thought Eater society revolves around the accumulation of Strange knowledge. Secrets, insights, and altered mental states function as both resource and product. Particularly complex or unusual minds are highly valued.

Spirituality

Thought Eaters do not practice worship. Their relationship to the King of All Tears appears intrinsic, expressed through relentless analysis and experimentation rather than reverence or ritual.

Magic and Technology

Thought Eaters are the most advanced biological manipulators among Eldritch species. They conduct magical biological research, reshaping flesh and mind with precise intent. Their laboratories consist of living structures, neural lattices, and suspended cerebral matter.

Culture

Integral scholars describe Thought Eater society as having the closest thing to a culture of any Eldritch beings. Their exploration and experimentation is a basis for memetic heritability. There are even "styles" of biological manipulation among different populations.

Ecology

Thought Eaters possess powerful telepathic communication across great distances. They can read surface thoughts effortlessly and probe deeper memories with sustained focus. They can incapacitate prey by disrupting coherent thought, inducing sudden confusion, paralysis, or catatonia without physical contact.

Their bodies are equipped with long, flexible tentacles capable of extracting brains with alarming speed and precision. This process is frequently performed while the victim remains conscious. The brains are used in their experimentation.
