Overview

Consolidation (Commontongue) is the process by which the number of Titans is reduced and their power combined as part of the Contest Eternal.

Lore about Consolidation is rare and very incomplete. It primarily comes from Dragons and Immortals, as Titans would never discuss the nature of this magic.

History

Consolidation is likely the oldest form of magic in the universe, having existed from the earliest living memories of Lost Age. It hasn't been practice since the early First Age, however, as nearly all of the titans that practice this form of magic have all been imprisoned since the end of the Foundation War.

Details

Dominion

Dominion (Enchiridian) is the most common form of Consolidation, and the kind that most titans prefer to engage in. This involves one titan defeating another titan in some form of the Contest. Sometimes this is a direct, violent confrontation between titans. More commonly, the conflict is a proxy contest through machinations and manipulations of Immortals and Dragons.

The victor of the conflict gains Dominion over the other, absorbing some or all of their power. The winners of Dominion typically retain their identity, though sometimes their personality or memories are altered slightly by the defeated titan, especially if they were quite powerful as well.

Fusion

Fusion (Enchiridian) is usually a last resort for titans who need to Consolidate power in extenuating circumstances. The reason it is less desirable is because the resulting Consolidated titan has an entirely new identity from the constituents. The nature of the Contest Eternal drives titans to preserve as much of their individual identity as possible. As a result, Fusion is admitting defeat, in a sense. But sometimes this is preferable to admitting defeat to a more powerful adversary. One of the more common situations where Fusion has occurred is weaker titans Consolidating their power so that they will not be Dominated by a more hated enemy.

Fragmentation

There is also a reversal of Consolidation, called Fragmentation (Enchiridian). Fragmentation happens for a variety of reasons:

Dominion is not usually complete. Some remnants of the defeated titan usually linger on. The identity, personality, and qualities of the fragmented titan are all changed, essentially creating a new titan from the remnants of the old. This is a form of Fragmentation.
Sometimes weaker titans will set out to Fragment a titan that is too strong for them to defeat through Dominion. If victorious, the result is Fragmentation.

When titans Fragment, they don't retain any aspects of their original identity or personality, instead forming new titans from the fragmented remains.

Rending

It should be noted that during the Foundation War the Founders unleashed a weapon that was similar to Fragmentation in some ways, but different in important ways, called Rending (Enchiridian). While Rending takes advantages of the same weak points that govern Fragmentation, the result is still the same unified titan, just in smaller pieces that were easier for the Founders to contain and bind.
