Overview

Meldspawn (Commonspeak), also Virilex (Farspeak [1] for no known translation), are an Eldritch species native to The Horizon realm of The Ivory City. They are characterized by their amorphous bodies and their relentless drive to assimilate all living matter into themselves. Their name derives from the way distinct forms lose definition upon contact, merging into a single continuous mass. Integral observers report extreme disorientation when attempting to distinguish individual Meldspawn, as their boundaries are unstable and frequently reconfigure. Their Eldritch God is The Conqueror Worm.

Integral understanding of Meldspawn derives primarily from post-incursion surveys of assimilated regions and analysis of recovered residue. Survivor testimony is rare, as complete assimilation leaves no witnesses.

History

Meldspawn came into existence at the beginning of the Shattered Age, alongside all Eldritch species, following the destruction of the Orrery. No records exist of earlier analogues or transitional forms.

Early Shattered Age incursions describe entire populations vanishing without signs of struggle, leaving behind landscapes coated in viscous residue and reshaped terrain, as if the ground itself had been partially absorbed.

Cosmology

Meldspawn are believed to be a Strange mutation of the Servitors of Destiny, once responsible for maintaining coherence of form and outcome within the Apparatus. With the collapse of the Grand Design of Destiny, this function appears to have inverted catastrophically.

Rather than preserving form, Meldspawn erase bodily distinction, dissolving the concept of discrete physical identity. Their existence aligns with the Conqueror Worm, whose influence undermines the very idea of spatial orientation and bodily ownership.

Meldspawn are native to the Ivory City, a Horizon region composed of polished bone and transmuted Apparatus remnants. The environment appears to be both substrate and extension of Meldspawn biology.

Society

Power Structures

Meldspawn do not exhibit hierarchy or leadership. Instead, they form temporary agglomerations, merging and separating based on proximity and mass. Larger conglomerations exhibit greater stability and influence, though these states are transient.

Economy

There is no exchange, accumulation, or scarcity among Meldspawn. Biological mass itself is the sole resource, and its absorption is both sustenance and propagation.

Spirituality

Meldspawn show no ritual behavior recognizable as worship. Their alignment with the Conqueror Worm appears reflexive, expressed through continual assimilation rather than devotion or reverence.

Magic and Technology

Meldspawn possess no tools or constructed artifacts. Their bodies function as living solvents, capable of breaking down and incorporating nearly any biological structure.

Culture

Integral scholars largely agree that Meldspawn lack culture. A minority hypothesis suggests that their repeated patterns of merger and division may constitute a non-symbolic social behavior, though no evidence of memory transmission exists.

Ecology

Meldspawn are amorphous, gelatinous beings with no fixed shape. Their bodies constantly shift and flow, forming temporary protrusions, pseudopods, and internal structures as needed. Surfaces of the body often display faint impressions of absorbed limbs, faces, or torsos, though these impressions fade as assimilation completes.

Meldspawn assimilate organisms through direct contact, dissolving flesh and leaving only bone. Absorbed individuals do not persist as conscious entities; identity is completely erased.

Meldspawn are able to fit through any aperture and can configure their bodies into any shape, though only loosely and not for long.
