Overview
Morrigan (Feytongue \ʌ\ for great queen) and Finvarra (Feytongue \ˈfɪnvɑrɑ\ for pale top) are believed to be their original actual Elven names translated into Feytongue. Like most Strange Gods, lore about Morrigan and Finvarra is rare and incomplete. The lore comes primarily from scholars who have studied the Bleak Gods and their Orisons.
Morrigan and Finvarra are the rulers of The Court of Half Tomorrows, and Gods of the Shee Olc. Their obsession is with incompletion: truth is found in the becoming, once something is fulfilled its truth is dead and lost.
History
Like all Bleak Gods, Morrigan and Finvarra came into existence when the Elves of Pelithos migrated across The Strange Sea to Arcadia in the early Dark Age.
Description
Queen Morrigan appears as an idealized elven monarch, with only subtle hints of her Shee nature: her eyes are slightly too large and too far apart, he ears are slightly too long. She has radiant grey eyes, silvered hair, and wears a gossamer gown that looks like the night sky full of stars. She wears an elegant, but slightly sinister looking silver crown.
Personality
Queen Morrigan is an unsettling mixture of imperious and kind. She condescends so effortlessly, it doesn't seem to come from a place of malice - as though anyone in her presence couldn't help but be a disappointment.
King Finvarra is distant and aloof king. He seems to be constantly coming awake as if out of a daydream. He never speaks, but wears a friendly smile, even when committing horrible acts.
Strange Philosophy
The Court of Half Tomorrows philosophy is based on the beliefs of Morrigan and Finvarra. "Half Tomorrows" is a poetic description of unrealized potential. Tenets of their philosophy include:
- Half-Truths are Sacred Truths: A full truth is dead. When something is omitted, concealed, or incomplete, it has potential, and it is in that potential where meaning is found. For this reason they treasure unfinished stories, unresolved arguments, and unfulfilled oaths.
- Tomorrow Should Never Arrive: It is in the anticipation that meaning is revealed, so the future is the only true thing. For this reason they value engagements more than marriages, pregnancies more than births, schemes more than success, and journeys more than destinations.
Perhaps the most sinister occupation that this philosophy has led to is one of the most famous of the Fey Courts: the stealing of children. Queen Morrigan and King Finvarra are famed for their interest in the unrealized potential of Mortal children. They see a child's potential as meaning in its purest form. They believe that by taking the child, they are consuming the life the child would have had, and that potential (and meaning) is "gifted" to the changeling left in the child's place.
Orisons
Most Half Tomorrows Orisons are Changelings and Fetchlings who already worship Morrigan and Finvarra. Sometimes Mortals are given an Orison Pact by these monarchs, usually as a result of an exceptional offering: such as an oath of endless endeavor.
