Main > Compendia > Creatures > Mortals

This category enumerates the varieties of conscious integral creatures native to the shards.

Overview

Mortals (Enchiridian) are named for the fact that they obey patterns of birth and death within the integrum.

Lore about mortals is plentiful and accurate. They are perhaps the most studied phenomenon in the integrum.

History

It is believed that mortals existed in the integrum since the Gilded Age, the focus of interest in the work of the founders in building The Apparatus.

Nothing is known of the mortals of the Gilded Age, as no known living creatures have direct experience with them. They are sometimes called paragons (race), and are believed to be the cosmological basis for the path of the same name.

During the Shattered Age, the paragons were fractured into varieties just like the shards. These varieties persist to the present day.

Cosmology

Mortals are best defined by their relationship to the grand designs of the integrum.

  • Mortals are born through parturition rituals invoking the influence of spring.
  • Mortals age and die through the influence of autumn.
  • Mortal societies and individuals are influenced by the emotional energies of summer, winter, day, and night.
  • Mortal minds and communication are shaped by pattern.
  • Mortal bodies are shaped and governed by form.
  • Mortal futures are, at least in theory, governed by destiny.
