Overview
Kopakita (Dawntongue \ˌkoʊˈpækɪtɑ\) is named for its small forest. Lore about Rothlene is thorough and accurate. It is highly civilized, well mapped, and studied by scholars and historians. It's biggest mystery is The Scornwake desert.
History
In the late Shattered Age, this island was known as Gemellia (Imperial \gɛˈmɛliə\ for little gem). The ancient petrified forest known as The Scornwake in Enchiridian was once called Uscavia in Dawntongue (\uˈskæviə\ for dry) was once called Thatra e Therjes in Darktongue (\ˈθɔtrʌ ɛ ˈθɛrjɛs\ for land of withering). In the Dark Age, an enterprising merchant thought to commoditize shadowmane cats by creating a breeding and livestock program. It ended bloodily and almost wiped out the entire village.
Local myths say that the island was blessed by ancient goddess Ydalla, which is why it is home to such tolerant, exotic animals.
Populations
Kopakita has a population of 48750, across 1 large city and 2 villages. High quality roads connect all of the settlements. The city is famous for species of exotic bird. The southernmost village is famous for a sort of domestication of Blur Cats.
- Solmira (Dawntongue) is a city with a population of 47200. It is on a fertile peninsula named Taluth Strand. It is known for a rare species of exotic bird (auralis) that nests on the roofs of the city. The town builds special tiles to support the beloved species.
- Nistrae (Elftongue) is a village with a population of 500. It is located on the northeastern coast. The fishing and farming village is most known for "salt glass", a form of mineral formed by lightning striking nearby salt cliffs, later fusing with beach sand. Salt glass gives the village its ancient name, roughly translating to "glimmer".
- Keldarlin (Commontongue) is a village with a population of 1000. It is located on the southwestern coast. The fishing and farming village is most famous for its semi-domesticated species of shadowname cats. Dark Age attempts to contain and breed the cats failed violently. The villagers remember that lesson well.
There are three major pieces of infrastructure on the island:
- Miraline Road. A well-maintained paved road that trails through small farming villages, connecting Solmira with Nistrae.
- Keldarch Way. A medium quality road that connects Solmira with Keldarlin, traveling through Austwyn Hollow.
- Windsong Tower. A large coastal lighthouse, observatory, and bird sanctum on a tiny islet north of Solmira.
Geography
- Mardanzin Reach. Kopakita is almost entirely flat plains, most of which is fertile ground.
- Austwyn Hollow. There is a small patch of dense forest in the center of the island.
- The Scornwake. In the southeast of the island is a small desert with a petrified forest.
Economy
Kopakita has extensive farmland. There is enough fishing and agriculture to feed the local population, and plenty of surplus agriculture to export, mainly to The Spike and Skeldheim. Kopakita is low in building stone, and so has lots of wooden structures and imports granite from Keshlene.
Landmarks
The Scornwake
Called Thatre e Tharjes in Darktongue, this desert with a petrified forest has mysterious origins. It is a swath of crumbling sandstone and hard-cracked earth where bleached, petrfified trees claw toward the sky. The forest abruptly halts at its edges, where the broken earth has its biggest rifts. Common myths include:
- The Scultpor's Folly: A Sovereign of Form known as The Sculptor went mad during the Dark Age and tried to "perfect" the forest found on this part of the island. The result was the petrified forest, which Aedifica bound the Servitor to as punishment.
- The Burning Bride: A woman who made a pact with The Ruby Queen had a wedding in this forest, and when left at the altar, this disaster was the result of her scorn. This myth is one of the origins of the name.
- Swarming Shell: Sailor's claim the desert crust is the shed shell of strange crab-like god (Soma) and that swarms of crab-like creatures lie in slumber beneath the surface.
- Pools of Venom: Some claim that the desert is dotted with Fury pools of poisonous liquid and that this Fury has damaged the land.
- Lover's Scorn: A hedonistic cult of Lascivia once settled in this forest, but displeased their God. She sent Demons to punish them, and the desert was the result. This myth is another origin of the name.
The Three Stones
Three ancient stones with petroglyph symbols. One stone depicts a cat, one a bird, and one a deer. Local myths believe that the stones were created by early worshippers of Ydalla.
